We’re proud to continue to grow this program by honoring the history and legacy of the NFR’s great champions and contributors in Las Vegas.”
For each icon, LVE will develop a promotional campaign to promote the two legends and build a daily activation calendar to build anticipation for the ceremony inside the Thomas & Mack Center that evening.
In addition to the banner ceremony during the second Wrangler NFR performance, several events are planned for the Icons, including appearances at Cowboy Christmas. LVE also will host a special reception for the Vegas NFR Icons. Additional details about the reception will be announced at a later date at NFRexperience.com.
Born in 1967 and raised in the small town of Cypress, Texas, Whitfield grew up wanting to be a cowboy. He and his brother, Anthony, grew up riding Shetland ponies bareback and roping anything and everything in sight. During his career, he was a trailblazer, becoming the first African-American cowboy in PRCA history to win an all-around title and only the second to win a world title. He went on to become one of the most decorated cowboys in PRCA history. He won eight world titles, including seven in tie-down roping and one all-around during his storied career.
Always known for being cool under pressure, Whitfield made a name for himself in ProRodeo by consistently coming through in clutch situations. His signature “raise the roof” salute caught on with fans across the country who became accustomed to his dramatic victories. His 10-head total of 84.0 seconds en route to the aggregate title in 1997 established a Wrangler NFR record and is considered one of the greatest performances in the history of the Wrangler NFR. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2004.
“Honestly, this is the icing on the cake for me,” said Whitfield. “When you’re fortunate to go through life and accomplish a lot of things that you set out to do, it’s very rewarding to be recognized. Outside of my family and having my two girls, this is one of the proudest moments of my career.
“I've been waiting on this day for a long time and had a lot of success in the PRCA and in Las Vegas as well. To be honored like this is a blessing, especially looking back at my career going against some of the fiercest competitors to ever come through the sport. I've been wanting to walk the dirt again at the Thomas & Mack Center for a long time, and to see my banner raised up will top it all off for me.”
Born into a ranching family in Northern Nevada, Tallman has served as the voice of professional rodeo for more than five decades. Tallman’s career began in earnest in Fallon, Nev., when he told a rodeo producer he thought he could do a better job than the announcer was doing. The producer told him to give it a try. Tallman earned $100 for that first job and has never looked back. His baritone voice and story-telling acumen are legendary in ProRodeo and at the Wrangler NFR. He went on to announce the NFR numerous times and earned 12 PRCA Announcer of the Year honors. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2004 and has also been inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, among others. In 2020, he was selected as the recipient of the Hall of Fame Legend of ProRodeo Award.
“I’m so honored to be selected as a Vegas NFR Icon. It's got to be the highest award that I have ever been offered in my lifetime – and I accept,” said Tallman. “Fred Whitfield and I went into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame together in 2004, so this only seems fitting that we’ll be together again in Las Vegas. As a proud Nevadan, it has been the basis of everything that I’ve lived for in 70+ years is to exemplify the sport of rodeo and to continue to show how important this industry is for all involved. This tremendous honor is an extension of a life-long dream to tell the story of rodeo.”
Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding to compete for a share of the increased purse and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle. In 2025, the event had a total attendance of 175,846 over the ten rounds of competition at the Thomas & Mack Center and has sold out 379 consecutive performances in Las Vegas.
