Invincible Steiner in Danger of Missing NFR Title Defense in 2026
By Brian Hurlburt
If there is a rodeo competitor out there with a personality and an aura that oozes invincibility, it would be Rocker Steiner. Heâs a hard-driving, brash, confident, fun-loving bareback world champion who lives life on his terms and tells it the way he sees it.
But after surgery in June 2026 to repair two herniated discs, the title defense of the 2025 PRCA Bareback Riding World Championship is in major jeopardy for the guy who appears to be tough as nails.

We first got a hint that things werenât right with Steiner during a May 2026 media appearance in Las Vegas to promote the Wrangler NFR, which is scheduled for Dec. 3-12, 2026.
In casual conversations between photo shoots and interviews, Steiner mentioned he was feeling stiff and hadnât been sleeping well of late. About a month later, news broke about his surgery and the predicted rehab time of three months.
If that schedule holds, Steiner could be back riding in September, with about a month left in the season.
The good news for Steiner and his fans is that, as of this writingâand after missing about a month of competitionâhe was still third in the world standings with $122,142 in earnings. Last year, the 15th and final NFR spot went to Tilden Hooper, who earned $139,950.
So, there is still a realistic chance for Steiner to make a run at world title No. 2.
But enough about what could happen. What did happen was Steiner lived a dream and won a gold buckle in 2025, continuing the family tradition. His father, Sid, was the 2002 PRCA Steer Wrestling World Champion, and his grandfather, Bobby, won the 1973 PRCA Bull Riding World Championship.
âWinning a world title is what I always dreamed about, and seeing the looks on the faces of my family when I first saw them in the media room after Round 10 was amazing,â Steiner said. âWith my mom, there was just a lot of crying and tears of joy. Then with my dad, we had a big hug and he just said, âWorld champ, baby!â I wonât forget that night.â

Steinerâs dad was part of the celebration, and he was also definitely part of the journey to world No. 1.
âHe always told me to ride with a chip on my shoulder because there are guys out here trying to take everything from you,â Steiner said. âYes, a lot of them are my friends, but at the end of the day, this is a selfish game we play, and there’s only one world champion in each event. I want to be that guy, but I will still be friends with them when the competition is over.â
Steiner celebrated the world title by partying at Resorts World and going on stage with Diplo, the international DJ. But he also shared that he didnât want to party too hard the night he won the world title because he wanted to remember everything.
Steiner also loves the entire NFR experience in Las Vegas, but he does keep things tame so he can heal his body and be ready for each night’s action on the dirt.
âThe NFR in Vegas is every cowboy’s vacation,â Steiner said. âWhen you come out here, nobody is in a bad mood. This is what everybody waits for each year. December is the best time to be in Vegas because this is the Cowboysâ Super Bowl.â
When Steiner talked in May, he very well might have been foreshadowing just how much pain he was in without divulging the potential depth of the injuries.
âWinning a PRCA world title is the hardest thing out there, and there are not many guys who have a gold buckle,â Steiner said. âThere are maybe a couple hundred world champions, and that might seem like a lot, but that’s not a lot when you really think about it. It is very hard to get this good, and it is very hard to stay healthy enough and stay focused.â
Truer words may never have been spoken.
