According to Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation president Deb DilIey, the “Bucks for Bags” auction is one of her organization’s largest fundraisers.

“We give approximately $100,000 in scholarships every year to contestants at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant,” Dilley said. “Every girl who competes at the Pageant will receive a minimum of $1,000 in a scholarship. We have awarded over 1 million dollars in scholarships since our inception.

Each girl–we have 28 contestants this year–has been asked to come up with a ‘bag’ and items to auction during the sale. The bag maybe of any type, but must not be larger than 62 linear inches. Over the years the girls have brought certificates for trips, jewelry, breeding opportunities for horses, food, drink, guns and knives among many other things. Many times, the items will be from their home state and represent that state. Anyone can come and participate in the auction. There is no limit to what they can spend or buy. Sometimes people buy more than one bag. The girls will go up on stage and will describe their own bag and then one of the auctioneers will begin selling it.  Also, this is a judged event.”

The Foundation has provided educational opportunities for the contestants since 1998. The contestants have gone on to be doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, TV/Radio personalities and business women to just name a few. Often the young ladies finish their education without owing any money in loans. Katherine Merck, Miss Rodeo America 2016, credits the Foundation with allowing her to graduate from Law School at Gonzaga debt free. That is just one of the many success stories.
